Our BackgroundIn November 1990, Save the Children Fund, UK (SCF) organised a symposium to share the results of its research on existing parenting education programmes in Jamaica. The findings were confirmed by over 150 delegates.
Despite efforts by many organisations over the years, the demand to deliver parenting education programmes had exceeded supply. Quality varied, and many suffered from the economic stringencies of the times The few “experts” were stretched to provide guest speeches and run workshops, and many requests for help were not answered. Save the Children Fund in collaboration with the Child Guidance Clinic, called together a cross-section of organisations with a mandate for family-building. They decided there had been enough talk - it was time for ACTION. A task group was formed, a name chosen to reflect the intention to share the load as partners, and then some very specific tasks were set for a 2-year period. Parenting Partners was born. With the growing regional scope, we became Parenting Partners Caribbean. |
