“Parenting Partners Caribbean
Pleased with Paternity Leave”
Kingston, Jamaica – July 13, 2022:
Parenting Partners Caribbean (PPC) is heartened to hear that fathers working in the public sector in Jamaica will soon (hopefully) be eligible for paternity leave, and that maternity leave is also being extended.
According to Mr. Joseph Heron, member of PPC and chair of the organisation’s ‘Affirming Fatherhood’ initiative, “While the government has not yet set a timetable for the duration, we support the initiative for paternity leave and encourage more leave for both mothers and fathers.” Mr Heron further noted that instituting paternity leave in Jamaica is a step in the right direction towards affirming fatherhood. He encouraged men and women to share and discuss the issues in the positive light in which it must be intended – for greater bonding within the family, especially between fathers and their children.
PPC further encourages the government to also ensure suitable parent education is provided for both mothers and fathers, during pregnancy and after the birth of their child. PPC President, Mrs. Linda Craigie Brown suggests that before establishing policy, time should be taken to do relevant research to give the best support to our men. She cautioned that space must be given to ensure that the many views on paternity leave and father involvement be aired; consultations must therefore be held with the various men’s, women’s and family development entities to fully explore the needs, expectations and the various cultural nuances that can inform the policy. The examples and lessons from those private sector entities that have already instituted paternity leave policies can be examined so we get the best fit for our public servants. Fathers, in embracing paternity leave, will need support and education to use it for the intended purpose of building family bonds.
The “Affirming Fatherhood” initiative, organised by Parenting Partners Caribbean (PPC), and endorsed by Caribbean Male Action Network (CariMAN) and the Violence Prevention Alliance, is aimed at changing the narrative about Caribbean fathers, and encouraging men to aspire to and demonstrate high standards of loving, caring fatherhood.
The initiative is also positioned to help broaden public discussion and understanding of the value of fatherhood; to strengthen fathers’ family engagement; improve family relationships and reduce family violence; encourage fathers’ active involvement in their children’s education and their own lifelong learning.
Parenting Partners Caribbean is a 30+ year-old non-profit organisation that has developed a range of Caribbean parenting material, conducted research and trained many parent Facilitators across the Caribbean.
